In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
