Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise significant questions about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
However, some conservative commentators and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But some do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Response
Clinton has consistently said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative approval to enact a law mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy folders of files that included no previously unseen information.
